Tharparkar Arid Zones of the Sindh, PakistanAim and LocationIn March 1999 CED received a request from the Participatory Village Development Programme (PDVP), Thar Region, Pakistan, for assistance with assessing optimum solutions to particular rural water supply problems followed by detailed design, planning and preparation of project proposals. The project area lies in the semi arid zones bordering the Sindh desert, where the rural population represent some of the poorest people in Pakistan. Improved water supplies are seen as a key to poverty alleviation and improved health. ResultPartnership agreements were made between CED and PVDP together with the Lower Sindh Rural Development Association (LSRDA). Role of CEDTwo CED Directors visited the project area in February 2000 for project evaluation. Recommendations were made for a well repair and mobile pump maintenance team and a proposal prepared for the repair of 50 wells in Tharpakar and the rehabilitation of Terais/Tankas. Total Cost of ProjectTotal expenditure to date has been €6,891 (£4,230) for consultancy and €21,507 (£13,202) for well repair works, i.e. €28,398 (£17,432). Project Donors
