Recatla Ecumenical Centre, Mozambique

Aim and Location

In January 1998, in response to a request from St Ninian's Church, Galashiels, Scotland, on behalf of the Church of Scotland Mission Partners in Recatla, near Maputo, Mozambique, CED undertook a feasibility study into the possibilities of utilising solar power to back up existing electricity supplies at Recatla hospital.

Result

A CED Director visited Recatla in May 1998 and prepared outline proposals for solar powered water pumps and improvements to the integrity of the existing electricity supply and distribution system, with solar powered emergency back up.

The Mozambique floods in 2000 interrupted further immediate consideration of the proposals.

Role of CED

CED's role to date has been to provide a consultancy service to the hospital. Further involvement will depend on the developing needs of the hospital.

Total Cost of Project

The total cost to date, for consultancy only, is €1,790 (£1,099).

Donors

St Ninian's Church, Galasheils, Scotland. €2,036 (£1,250)
